Video: Police Raid in Kano Angers Muslims

Following the attack last Friday that left 185 people in Kano state dead, Nigerian police raided a house in the northern state looking for members of Boko Haram, the Islamist armed group thought to be behind the attacks. Tuesday’s raid led to an hours-long gun battle with police, with family members claiming that a husband and wife were among those shot and killed by police gunfire, and denying that they had any part in last week’s attack. Locals say that authorities are unfairly targeting the most devout Muslims of the community.

The death toll has risen from the series of co-ordinated bombings and attacks in the northern Nigerian city of Kano. According to the government and the Red Cross, at least 120 people were killed. Hospital officials say more than 140 died. The city has been put under a curfew after police stations across the city were targeted.

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan is facing opposition to his decision to cut fuel subsidies, which saw petrol prices double overnight when the decision was made at the start of the year. Labour unions have now called for a nationwide strike to begin on Monday. This comes following a series of demonstrations held over the past week. Sectarian violence in the country has also worsened recently, causing a rise in tensions on the street. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s finance minister, spoke to Al Jazeera from the capital Abuja.

Amid fears that a recent string of attacks targeting Christians could drive the nation towards civil war, Ayo Oritsejafor, the head of the Christian Association of Nigeria, has said Christians must defend themselves against violence. Boko Haram, the radical Islamist group responsible for killing Christians in the mainly Muslim north, has vowed further attacks and bloodshed. Oritsejafor said: “We have the legitimate right to defend ourselves and … we will do whatever it takes.”

On the same day that he visited the bomb blast sites, President Jonathan declared a state of emergency in parts of the country in a bid to halt a recent slew of deadly attacks blamed on the radical Muslim sect Boko Haram, which killed dozens of people.

President Goodluck Jonathan declared the state of emergency in four states and ordered the closure of international borders near the affected areas.They include parts of northeastern state of Yobe, and the central states of Plateau and Niger, all hit by the Christmas Day attacks that left at least 42 people dead, for which a radical sect known as Boko Haram claimed responsibility.
